Press Release: 2009 Voices for Children Award Winners

At its annual luncheon, the Children’s Alliance will present five awards honoring child advocates whose work has improved the lives of Washington children. These diverse activists have spoken up for children, youth and families—they have demanded healthcare for all Washington children, pressed for the rights of birth parents within the child welfare system, secured funding for early learning programs for the children most at risk of being left behind.

The Children’s Alliance goes to the other Washington

Our Federal Government handles many pressing issues – from foreign affairs to the environment to the economy. So where do kids fit into the picture? And what does that Washington have to do with what happens in Washington state?

The answer is a lot, which is why we sent our federal staffer to Washington D.C. last week to advocate for kids. What happens in the halls of Congress helps shape what programs are and aren’t funded in our state.

Standing Strong For Kids: 2010 Legislative Session Review

In good times and bad, we advocate for laws and policies that support our state’s most vulnerable children – especially those in low-income families and communities of color. Our key challenge during the 2010 legislative session was to protect vital services for children and families from budget cuts that could have erased decades of progress. We achieved remarkable success on many levels this year, preserving critical support systems for families weathering the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression.

Read our in 2010 Legislative Session Review for an in-depth look at our victories for kids across Washington state and the challenges that lie ahead.

We can't do it alone. Whether you are raising kids, teaching kids, organizing parents, serving struggling families, answering an e-mail call to action, none of us can do it all by ourselves. Join other Children's Alliance members at a community meeting to get ready to speak up for kids in the next legislative session.
